Stories That Sparkle- The Journey of Writing Workshop
What started as a small idea to hold a writing workshop for the children in my building turned into something much more magical than I ever imagined.
When that first plan didn’t take off, I decided to try something different. Since I was already conducting Project Spark Science workshops at an NGO, I thought, why not test out my writing session there? That one trial changed everything.
The kids dove into the session with so much enthusiasm. They created quirky, funny and heartwarming stories on the spot. The teachers not only enjoyed the workshop, but some even began taking down notes- something that gave me a quiet moment of pride and told me I was on the right path.
Encouraged, I designed a simple, engaging worksheet that outlined the key building blocks of storytelling: setting, characters, conflict, climax and resolution- laid out in a way that felt fun and accessible. With that, Writing Workshop was born.
Over the next few weeks, I conducted several workshops for grades 5 and 6 at Muktangan schools. We kicked off each session by breaking down popular stories like The Ramayana or Hansel and Gretel into core storytelling elements. This helped the children understand how stories are structured and gave them a roadmap to create their own.
I then walked them through each element, giving examples and invited them to craft a story of their own using cues from the worksheet. We ended every session with a read-aloud and I was amazed. Kids stood up confidently, excited to share what they had written. They didn’t worry about grammar or spelling- they just wanted to tell their story. And the stories were incredible.
Many spoke of their mothers and siblings, painting portraits of love and care. Others dreamed of cricketers, superheroes, princes or friendly ghosts. The characters leapt off the page with imagination and innocence.
I realized then, these kids weren’t just learning how to write. They were learning how to express themselves. And they were loving it.
Now I’m taking Writing Workshop a step further. I’m inviting a real author to conduct an advanced workshop for 15 of the most promising young writers. Together, we’ll polish their stories and I’ll be printing them in a beautiful collection that each child can take home and treasure. A keepsake that will tell them that their voice matters. And words have power.
Writing Workshop is not just about storytelling- it's about confidence, creativity and building a love for writing that might just last a lifetime.
